Volunteer Building Projects

Overview

Volunteer Building Projects in Jamaica

Do you ever watch the news and get depressed when you see people homeless or in need of just a little help to get somewhere to live? And do you ever wish that you could help them? – In fact, you can as a participant in volunteer building projects abroad. This is a great way to give back and discover a new culture.

If you enjoy working with your hands and love a physically-demanding challenge you can have the opportunity of going to Jamaica to do carpentry, painting, plumbing or other general construction work.

Community building projects abroad volunteers will work alongside expert local builders who will guide you and pass on the skills needed to complete the construction process.

Building 7

Lack of habitable buildings to live can be seen all around

One of the quickest ways to see the poverty in Jamaica is to take a quick trip around the capital of Kingston and other areas outside the city. The structures of many of the houses are built from zinc, and shacks or dilapidated buildings with roofs missing can be seen at a glance. Because living in these disadvantaged communities breed crime and hopelessness, volunteers are needed for building maintenance and to rehabilitate and restore these houses.

One of the greatest needs in most communities is for the repair of schools. Many schools located in some of the poorest neighborhoods in Jamaica are overcrowded. Bathrooms leak, desks and chairs need urgent repairs – Peeling walls need painting and teachers urgently need teaching aides.

Volunteer Building Project for Basic Schools

A tour of many basic schools for ages 3 – 6 will find a lack of adequate furniture, as most of these schools are funded by fees from parents who are unemployed or who earn the minimum wage. Your support in providing repairs and maintenance will help to lower the cost of running these schools.

Lack of proper school buildings and homes retards productivity, but by lending your skills, flexibility and creativity you can make a difference. The people who you’ll meet will be so grateful and friendly that it will change the way how you see others. Volunteer construction projects abroad are the key to the development of disadvantaged communities.

If you have a passion to give back through volunteer building projects overseas, you can work as an individual or as a group. Some popular groups for these projects are teen volunteering, alternative spring break and student service learning.

As a volunteer building projects participant you do not need any prior experience to work as an extra pair of hands are always welcome to bring supplies or mix cement and paint. For those who have specialist skills you will be especially welcomed as many times people in these improvised communities do not have the funds to pay for skilled work.

Working on a building or doing a construction project requires planning and great preparation especially in finding funds to buy supplies. Before you make the decision to select this project, contact our program advisor to find out the projects available and to get an estimate of the cost of the materials that would be necessary to cover the completion of the project.

Funding your volunteer building projects can sometimes seem overwhelming but others have come up with creative ideas or have found sponsors who will contribute to their projects.

How it works?

Orientation: On you arrival at your volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During the orientation you’ll be told what to expect the following day, the time of departure and pick up.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project we will provide transportation. Depending on your project location, you may be transported alone or as part of a group.

What to expect on the first day of your project

We promised to be always there for you, so as a part of your in-country support, we provide one of our Program Advisors to accompany you to your project on your first day. You will be introduced to the local staff and we help you settle in. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Free Times in the afternoons:

Most evenings you’ll return to your volunteer home to hang out and plan for the next day, but we continually look for eye-opening cultural activities for you to do in your free time.

Start Dates

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations

Our volunteer Community building projects are available all year round allowing you to take part when you can so on your application you will indicate your start and end dates. Although we are flexible there are times during the year when Jamaica has major holidays and celebrations, so it is advisable to plan your trip that your dates do not coincide with these major events.

Pre-set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid –week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
