Alternative Spring Break Opportunities

Alternative Spring Break is the investment of a lifetime. Alternative Spring Break opportunities gives you a chance to change other people’s lives and your own and gain the very best “Real Life” education. For high school, college and university students, spring break is the time to break away and do something differently.

Instead of using your vacation to sit on a beach with hundreds of other tourists, drinking alcohol or sunbathing, use your time to benefit the world around you. Another way you can win during Spring Break is by building your intangible skills.

Spring Break ideas

What can you do for an alternative Spring Break? Here are just a few of the popular ways you can make a difference:

Volunteer Teaching

If you enjoy teaching and love the thrill of making a difference in the lives of young people, come to Jamaica and volunteer as a teacher. Working in schools will offer the shortcut to make fast friends while learning about the Jamaican food, language and culture.

Volunteer in an Orphanage

Do you love working with children and want to share your love? Volunteer in an Orphanage and share your interests and skills with children who have no parents. Jamaica is a poor country with a high level of unemployment. A trip around the city and any major town will allow you to see children especially young boys begging at major traffic intersections. Many of these teens end up in Orphanages and government homes waiting for someone to offer them hope and inspiration.

Building Maintenance

Do you like to work with your hands doing building construction, carpentry, painting, plumbing or other general maintenance work? If you do, come to Jamaica for your college Spring Break and be part of a team that will make a difference in repairing schools and orphanages.

Alternative Spring Break opportunities offer students a chance to get real world experience, explore career options and build a resume while making a true difference in the lives of the people and communities And there’s more – You’ll have lots of fun exploring Jamaica!

Get more out of your trip by combining cultural immersion, meaningful work and excursions. At the end of your trip, you’ll walk away with an experience of a lifetime.

Project Info

Project Info

Alternative Spring Break opportunities are open to all, whether you volunteer in February or during the peak season of March.

When volunteering during Spring Break you have the option to volunteer as an individual or with a group. No experience is necessary but you must be flexible and be able to adapt to new experiences.

Here’s how the process works:

Step 1

We will work with you to find a project for your skills and to match your goals and objectives.

Step 2

You will be contacted by a Program Advisor to discuss the details of your itinerary. We want your work to be impactful so we’ll share ideas that other volunteers have successfully used in the past.

Step 3

Start purchasing or collecting supplies to use with the children. Some of these could be balls, skipping ropes, crayons, craft items, or play dough.

Project Schedule:

Our project schedule is flexible. We work from Monday – Friday. Some projects may occasionally have activities on a Saturday but arrangements can be made for you to participate. Weekends are reserved for cultural immersion activities. These could be, day excursions or trips to learn about the history and culture of Jamaica.

Duration of this project

This project runs for a minimum of one week and a maximum of three months.

Combine One or More Projects

Do more and go further by teaching in the mornings and working with children at an orphanage in the evenings.

How this program works?

On your arrival at our volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During the orientation you’ll be told what to expect the following day and the time of departure.

 Transportation:

From the start to the end of your project you’ll be provided with daily transportation.

What to expect on your first day

  1. Our local staff will work with you and help you settle in
  2. As part of our in-country support, we will arrange for one of our program advisors to accompany you to your project
  3. We’ll make sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Free Times in the Evenings:

In your free time in the afternoons, we want to offer you more than just a meal. We want you to immerse in the culture of your new community and connect with the local people.

Start Dates

Start Dates

All alternative Spring Break volunteer projects start between February and mid April allowing you to take part when you can during the spring. On your application you should indicate your start and end dates.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?

It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome.

Pre-set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid–week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your experience. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
