Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care Programs Abroad

Animal Volunteer Programs Abroad

Overview

Animal Volunteer Programs Abroad

If you’re like a lot of animal lovers looking to volunteer abroad you have probably wondered what it is like to care for animals in need in a new country. Are you looking for animal volunteer programs abroad? There are many opportunities to care for animals in Jamaica as many pet owners find they are unable to care for their pets and cannot afford the high cost of veterinary services.

Pets are often abandoned on the streets and left to wander in search of food. Others are lost and need new homes or to be kept safe. Because of this, several non-profit organizations have established shelters for these homeless animals and are offering animal volunteer programs. If you are a student studying veterinary medicine, have no prior experience but just enjoy looking after animals and want to learn more, there are opportunities to get involved with hands on work.

Project Info

Project Info

When you participate in animal volunteer programs abroad you will be placed in a public shelter for homeless or abused and mistreated animals. These centres would also house pets that have been lost and in need of new owners. You do not need to have prior experience in animal care to volunteer in this program. All you need to have is a love for animals and enjoy caring for them.
If you are a veterinary student and want to build skills and get more experience in advance procedures, we can place you in private facilities.

To make your work impactful, pre –planning is important so making a decision early on the type of activities you’ll do is important. If you are interested in providing education to schools on the care of animals we can offer you opportunities to do this. Maybe you want to work with dogs alone or you can work with any animal that needs care. We’ll look at your interests, and skills to find the perfect match for you.

Project days & times:

Your animal care projects will be available Monday – Fridays from 9:00 am to approximately 4:30 pm. If you would like a shorter day we can organize this.

We want you to be totally immersed in the Jamaican culture so on weekends our organization offers day excursions and cultural immersion experiences. We continually look for eye-opening cultural activities for you to do in your free time.

Duration of this project

The duration of this volunteering project ranges from a minimum of one week to a maximum of three months. If you require a longer duration special arrangements would be needed so contact us.

Combine projects

Animal care volunteers often combine animal volunteer programs abroad placements with work in Orphanages. If you are interested in working with children in Orphanages or childcare facilities you can make this request.

How Animal Volunteer Programs abroad programs works?

After arriving at the volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During this session you’ll be told what to expect for the duration of your stay.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project we will provide transportation. Your project location will determine whether you get transported by yourself or with other volunteers.

What to expect on the first day of your project

We promised to support you every step of the way, so as a part of your in-country support we provide one of our Program Advisors to accompany you to your project on your first day. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Fun afternoon activities:

Afternoons are reserved to be used for fun activities such as cultural events or planning your work for the next day.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our animal volunteer opportunities abroad projects are available all year- round allowing you to take part when you can, so on your application, you’ll indicate your start and end dates. Although we are flexible there are times during the year when Jamaica has major holidays and celebration, so it is advisable to plan your trip that your dates do not coincide with these major events.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?
It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome.

Pre- set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid –week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
