Christmas Volunteering Abroad Opportunities

Overview

Looking for Christmas Volunteer Abroad Opportunities?

You can’t miss it! It is everywhere… beautifully decorated Christmas trees, carols on the radio and busy shoppers getting presents. It is the most wonderful time of the year for many children with parents and relatives to celebrate this special time.

For children who live in institutions, orphanages, or poor communities, Christmas can be the most lonesome time.

Because we know it is a difficult time of the year, Jamaica Volunteer Programs partners with a selected number of orphanages during the month of December with activities to celebrate the season.

Here’s how it works

Each year from August – December we ask our volunteers, subscribers and local organizations to donate gifts and food for the Christmas parties. Over a two week period we ask volunteers to join us as we celebrate Christmas at the orphanage. The activities include games, dance contests and popular sports like basketball. This is a time that the children will treasure and tuck away in their hearts for the tough times.

Escape the winter cold and join us in this life changing experience. If you would like to participate in the Christmas break volunteer abroad celebrations, you must arrive in Jamaica before the 13th of December or by the 19th for the last party on Saturday the 20th.

You can help us make this event a success by joining our Facebook community and spreading the word to your favourite social media network. Why not be BOLD this Christmas and give a gift of your time… create memories for these children that will last forever.

Project Info

Project Info

Projects are based in Kingston and St. Andrew, the capital of Jamaica. Volunteers work from Monday – Friday. Weekends are free to explore and immerse in the Jamaican culture. Our Christmas volunteer abroad opportunities are open to all, whether you travel for winter break volunteer abroad trips or a volunteer vacation.

Volunteering during Christmas can be done as an individual or in a group. Although no prior experience is needed to volunteer, you will need to be flexible and have a passion for working with children.

Before you depart your home country, our program advisor will contact you to help you create an itinerary for the activities you want to do with the children. We will share with you ideas that have been successful in the past so you can use them to make a quick start.

To ensure that your trip is impactful, decide early on the activities you will be doing. Next, start collecting or purchasing resource items like art & craft supplies, crayons, play dough and sports equipment for the young ones.

Project days & times:

Christmas Volunteer opportunities for orphanages are usually run Monday – Friday with flexible times. We can arrange shorter days for those who require. Some projects might have some activities on Saturdays but these are usually pre-planned so we would work with you to make all the arrangements.

On some afternoons and weekends our organization offers day excursions and cultural immersion experiences. Our goal is to not only offer you volunteering projects but help you immerse in the local culture.

Duration of this project

Christmas volunteering abroad programs are available for a minimum of one week but you can extend your stay for a maximum of three months. If you require a longer duration special arrangements would be needed so contact us.

How Christmas Volunteer Abroad opportunities works?

On your arrival at our volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During the orientation you’ll be told what to expect the following day and the time of departure.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project we will provide transportation. Depending on your project location, you may be transported alone or as part of a group.

Accommodation

There are two types of Home Stay accommodations offered. You can be housed in a Dorm or elect to be in single or double occupancy rooms.

Living in a local community offers you the chance to touch, feel and see up close the Jamaican culture.

What to expect on the first day of your project

As a part of your in-country support we provide one of our program advisors to accompany you to your project on your first day. You will be introduced to the local staff to help you settle in. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Cultural Activities in the Afternoons:

During the week you will hang out at the volunteer home during your free time but we always try to offer opportunities for you to attend eye-opening cultural activities.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our Christmas volunteer abroad opportunities are available only during the month of December allowing you to share the joy of Christmas with less fortunate children.

Pre-set arrival dates

The dates for the Christmas volunteer projects are always displayed on our website, but if you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid–week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your experience. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
