Jamaica Volunteer Programs - Elderly Volunteer Opportunities

Overview

Elderly Volunteer Opportunities Abroad

Have you ever wondered what it is like to make elderly people smile when they get the care and attention they need in their daily lives? It’s like nothing you could ever imagine!

Elderly care volunteers are needed in Jamaica to support the needy and chronically ill. Because of poverty and the worldwide recession several companies and corporations from abroad have moved out of the island leaving bread winners without a job. Without an income many cannot offer support and care to elderly relatives.

Several Government organizations, non- profits and others doing elderly volunteer opportunities in Jamaica have stepped in to provide help. The need for these services is great and the funding inadequate, so there is a heavy reliance on volunteer services.

Elderly volunteer opportunities volunteering aims to provide a family atmosphere and environment that fosters dignity, respect and love for each person. It also seeks to develop their abilities and skills for a better quality of life.If you are a student, retiree or professional and have an interest in caring for the elderly, you can make a difference in the lives of these people. The staff providing the senior care volunteer work often has a heavy workload with long hours.

There is urgent need for nurses, physical therapists, doctors or professionals who can offer direct assistance.
Aged care volunteer work requires no experience as most people are grateful for just companionship and attention. Many people do not have time to take up elderly volunteer opportunities so if you have love and compassion you’ll be making a difference in their lives.

Here are some of the most urgent tasks you can assist with:

  • Provide administrative support to the organization
  • Read to patients who cannot see – many want to read the bible especially
  • Play games or work with art & craft
  • Assist in the preparation of meals or help with feeding
  • Massage or do physical therapy
  • Talk to them and just listen to their stories
  • Hold their hands and provide companionship
  • Help clean and organize their living accommodation
  • Take a walk with to get fresh air & exercise

If you are looking for a worthwhile project and have an interest in the health and well being of elderly care patients, Jamaica is waiting to welcome you!

Project Info

Project Info

To work on this project no prior experience is required but you must have love, compassion, flexibility and adaptability. When you volunteer to care for the elderly you will be placed in a nursing home or a home for the aged. Many of these facilities provide shelter and care for the poor and the destitute.

Qualified healthcare professionals are needed, especially students in training who are looking to build skills and get experience.

To make your work impactful, pre –planning is important so making a decision early on the area you want to work is important. Our team of advisors will look at your interests and skills and find the perfect match for you.

Project days & times:

Your elderly care volunteer projects will be available Monday – Fridays from 9:00 am to approximately 4:30 pm. Sometimes you might be required to work on a Saturday but these are usually pre-planned so we would work with you to make all the arrangements.

We want you to be totally immersed in the Jamaican culture so on weekends our organization offers day excursions and cultural immersion experiences. We continually look for eye-opening cultural activities for you to do in your free time.

Duration of this project

You can volunteer for a minimum of one week or a maximum of three months. If you require a longer duration special arrangements would be needed so contact us.

Combine Projects

Volunteers who work with elderly care often combine placements with work in Orphanages. If you are interested in working with children in Orphanages or childcare facilities you can make this request.

How this program works?

On your arrival at your volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During the orientation you’ll be told what to expect the following day, the time of departure and pick up.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project, we will provide transportation. Depending on your project location, you may be transported alone or as part of a group.
What to expect on the first day of your project

We promised to be always there for you, so as a part of your in-country support, we provide one of our Program Advisors to accompany you to your project on your first day. You will be introduced to the local staff and we help you settle in. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our Elder care projects are available all year- round allowing you to take part when you can, so on your application you’ll request your start and end dates.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?

It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome as caregivers for the elderly need a break to spend time with their families.

Pre- set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid –week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
