Conservation & Environmental Volunteer Abroad Projects

Overview

Volunteering on an Conservation & Environmental Volunteer Abroad Project

Are you an advocate of Environmental Volunteer Abroad projects abroad and want to share your passions with others? Come to Jamaica to help with the management of two of our important resources; our oldest and most popular park, Hope Gardens, and the city’s closest beach, Hellshire.

Conservation Volunteer Projects of our National Park

The Royal Botanic Gardens of Hope, located in Kingston Jamaica, is the largest botanical garden of the English speaking Caribbean islands. It features many indigenous, exotic native flora, and fauna. This was a place for lovers, families with children who want to have picnics, and the place to visit if you are looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.Over the years the park has been deteriorated by vandals.A great cry went up from the people to restore the park, and today a non- profit organization by the name of Nature Preservation Foundation runs the gardens and Zoo.

One of the goals of this organization was to offer environmental volunteer abroad programs to improve the plant conservation. This facility it is hoped will increase the conservation of plant species with a focus on the endemic species and help ensure that the beautiful and diverse natural resources of Jamaica are not destroyed.

The limited funding for these projects has created a greater demand for volunteers who will provide extra help and skills. There is need for continuous research on identifying new plant species, and developing irrigation methods. Popular activities you could be involved in are helping with soil erosion control, maintenance of the park’s nursery garden, studying the rare flora and fauna found in the park and assisting in the construction and maintenance of trails within the park.

As the world continues to experience changes with Global Warming, there is need to provide education about protecting the environment. There is need to create awareness in schools and communities about preserving our parks and the work done there. Your work will help locals to better understand the environment and its importance to the economy.

Conservation projects to Preserve Hellshire Beach

Another great environmental project that urgently needs help is the popular Hellshire Beach in the parish of St. Catherine. On most weekends, hundreds of people can be found on the beaches swimming and eating the world famous ‘Bammy & Fish.’ With the numerous beach huts selling bottled water and sodas, on any given day dozens of plastic bottles and plates are deposited on the beach shore.

With no proper waste disposal facilities, plastics can be found everywhere and eventually most of the garbage and sewage is released in the sea causing the destruction of the beach’s natural coral reef. The natural purpose of the reef is to break the waves coming on shore and with the continual loss of this, there is rapid beach erosion.

Environmental and conservation volunteers have been helping to clear the beach of the pile up of garbage but more help is needed. In addition to helping to clear more trash, you can collect data on the sources and type of garbage harming our oceans and waterways. With this data you can work with the Jamaica Environment Trust to educate and inspire the local people about the importance of recycling and raise awareness in the fight to shape decisions on environmental policies.

When you are part of a volunteer conservation overseas team you do not need to have prior experience, all you need to have is a love for the environment and a passion for helping others.

To make your work impactful, pre –planning is important, so making a decision early on the type of activities you’ll do is vital. Just contact us as soon as you have made the decision and we’ll look at your interests and skills and find the perfect match for you.

Project days & times:

Your environmental volunteer abroad projects will be available Monday – Fridays from 9:00am to approximately 4:30pm. If you would like a shorter day we can organize this.

We want you to be totally immersed in the Jamaican culture so on weekends our organization offers day excursions and cultural immersion experiences. We continually look for eye-opening cultural activities for you to do in your free time.

Duration of this project

You can volunteer for a minimum of one week or a maximum of three months. If you require a longer duration special arrangements would be needed so contact us.

COMBINE PROJECTS

Environmental conservation volunteers often combine placements with work in Orphanages. If you are interested in working with children in Orphanages or childcare facilities you can make this request.

How this program works?

Orientation: On you arrival at your volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During the orientation you’ll be told what to expect the following day and the time of departure.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project we will provide transportation. Depending on your project location type, you may be transported alone or as part of a group.

What to expect on the first day of your project

We promised you that you’ll always have our team working with you so as a part of your in-country support we provide one of our Program Advisors to accompany you to your project on your first day. You will be introduced to the local staff who will help you settle in. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our environmental volunteer abroad programs are available all year-round allowing you to take part when you can, so on your application, you’ll indicate your start and end dates. Although we are flexible there are times during the year when Jamaica has major holidays and celebration, so it is advisable to plan your trip that your dates do not coincide with these major events.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?
It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome.

Pre- set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid–week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
