Meaningful Sports Volunteer Coaching Abroad Opportunities

Overview

Sports Volunteer Coaching Abroad Opportunities

Are you looking for sports volunteer coaching abroad opportunities? If your passion is coaching, then Jamaica is the place for you. Sports play a significant role in the Jamaican culture and is the ‘heartbeat ‘of the country.

Every child in Jamaica secretly holds the dream of being a ‘star’ in the land where Track & Field legends are crowned every year.
Our 100 and 200 metres world record holder Usain Bolt’s success has ignited the passion of our local athletes, so there is always a group of athletes ready and waiting to start training for the big break.

Jamaica has one of the most well organized and vibrant track & field programs worldwide. Most schools train their athletes year round just to compete during the month of March in the Boys & Girls Athletics Championships.

Sports volunteer coaching programs for football (soccer) is another passion on the island. In every community that there is a football field, the game is usually the main entertainment for the people. Ever since the Jamaican team, Reggae Boys, qualified for the World Cup in 1998 the passion and love for this game has gone to another level.

Elite sports like swimming and tennis are available, but reserved mostly for the rich and upper middle class. You can however, introduce them to children from Orphanages and poor communities. Although rich in talent, many have never experienced the thrill of swimming, playing a game of tennis or even crossing the finish line to achieve ‘glory’ – Make a difference by giving them this opportunity.

Come coach sports and volunteer abroad in Jamaica for whatever game you enjoy, and if you have a passion for developing sports in schools, you can help coach children and teams.

Project Info

Project Info

Our sports volunteer coaching abroad programs places volunteers in a schools where they will have opportunities to work with one sport or a combination of several. Schools in Jamaica focus on football for boys and netball for girls in the fall semester. In the Easter semester, it is all about track & field for all students. For the remainder of the school year, it will be a combination of basketball, volleyball and cricket.

Whatever sport you specialize in, you can work alone or with the physical education teacher to build the skills of the students. If you want to work with a special sport but do not have coaching experience, you can still be a coach. All you need to have is a good understanding of the game and enthusiasm.

Jamaica has several clubs in every community for all types of sports. These are mainly football, basketball and track & field clubs among others. If you are looking to offer your coaching skills and looking for young people who are dedicated to a particular sport, the clubs in poor and impoverish communities would offer the best opportunities.

To make your sports volunteer coaching abroad trip impactful, pre–planning is crucial so making a decision early on the type of activities you’ll do is important. We will guide you and share ideas that have been successful with others before.

Project days & times:

Your coaching will be during the regular school days Monday – Friday. Many teams practise in the afternoons after school. If you want to get involved in coaching clubs you would be expected to do this in the afternoons. Competitions are held on Saturdays  and are usually pre-planned so if you want to attend any of these, we’ll help you make the necessary arrangements.

We want you to be totally immersed in the culture so on weekends our organization offers day excursions and cultural immersion experiences. We continually look for eye-opening cultural activities for you to do in your free time.

Duration of this project

The minimum period you can volunteer in sports coaching abroad programs is one week and the maximum is three months.

Want to Merge Different Projects?

Coaches who volunteer in schools often want to work with children in the Orphanages. If you are interested in coaching children who live in homes and institutions, you can help them build skills and develop a winning attitude.

How it works?

On your arrival at our volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During this session you’ll be told what to expect the following day and the time of departure.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project we will provide transportation. You may be transported alone or with other volunteers.

What to expect on the first day of your project

You’ll always have our team working with you every step of the way. Our local staff will help you settle in and on your first day of work a Program Advisor will accompany you to your project. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do. Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Activities in the afternoons:

We continually search for memorable cultural activities for you to experience in your free time and sometimes offer opportunities for you to attend local events.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our sports volunteer coaching abroad projects are available all year- round allowing you to take part when you can, so on your application, you’ll indicate your start and end dates. Although we are flexible there are times during the year when Jamaica has major holidays and celebrations, so it is advisable to plan your trip that your dates do not coincide with these major events.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?

It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome.

Pre- set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid –week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
