Looking for Orphanage Volunteer and Child Care Programs Abroad?

Overview

Orphanage Volunteer and Child Care Programs in Jamaica

Have you been thinking about what it would be like to volunteer in an Orphange or childcare facility? If you do this – why not share your love with a child in Jamaica. When you volunteer with Orphanage Volunteer and Child Care Programs in Jamaica, you’ll receive hugs and kisses. This experience could allow you to reflect on your life and might leave you feeling humbled. Jamaicans are said to be some of the friendliest people in the world and your most special moments will be those when you meet these ‘little people.’

Why Jamaica needs you for Orphanage Volunteer Programs.

Jamaica is often associated with crystal clear water and stunning beaches, but the island is much more than great beaches… It has huge communities of poor people and a large number of these are children.

To solve this problem, the government, churches and non-profit organizations have established Orphanages and childcare facilities. Help is needed to support the staff running the centres as well as teaching the children some basic life skills.

Orphanage Volunteer and Child Care Programs Abroad

Child care volunteering abroad

House mothers and care givers work with the children long hours and deal with large numbers of children. Often times they are unable to give the one-on-one interaction and the invidualized attention needed for emotional growth and development.

In-addition, some of these staff members do not have the education and experience to motivate these young ones to new levels of achievement. Orphanage Volunteer and and Child Care Programs Abroad can help in-still a positive outlook and enthusiastic attitude to make the difference.

The orphanages and child care facilities where you’ll be working are located mostly in the city and in the parish of St. Andrew. They house boys and girls from ages 3–14 years. In some special childcare centers in poor communities, there are babies and children below three years.

How can you make a difference?

Most of the Orphanages around the island of Jamaica rely heavily on volunteers and donations in order to survive. Volunteering covers every aspect of our lives so there is always something to do. Because of this, there are very few requirements.

Thinking about how you can make a difference?

Making a difference is not very difficult as these children often do not need very much. You can buy gifts and supplies but you’ll notice that the most precious moments will be when you play with them and just give love. Many of these children do not receive the level of education and affection that they deserve, and volunteers play an important role in working alongside the local staff to provide these.

Although your time with these young ones might be short you can make an impact as you teach them about your culture, help them dream bigger dreams, and be a mentor. Don’t forget that many of these children have challenges, so being understanding and patient is very important in working with them.

Is Jamaica a part of the world you’ve heard about, read about, maybe even dreamed about when researching for orphanage volunteering overseas? If you have – why not experience it by joining one of our orphanage volunteer and childcare abroad trips.

Explore this exotic island and learn about its culture but most importantly change other people’s lives and your own!

To help you make an impact on your project we will offer you guidance and give you examples of activities that have been successful with past volunteers.

Deciding early on the activities you wish to participate in will increase the chances of you having the life changing volunteer experience you are looking for.

As soon as you decide on the activities you want to do, start collecting or purchasing supplies, such as crayons, play dough, sports equipment or art & craft items for the children.

Project days & times:

Our projects are usually run Mondays – Fridays with flexible times. We can arrange shorter days for those who require. Some projects might have activities on Saturdays which are normally pre-planned. We will help you to make the necessary arrangements.

Our organization offers cultural immersion experiences and excursions during the week and on weekends.

Duration of this project

The maximum period for volunteering on this project is three months and the minimum one week.

Want to Combine Projects?

Most children from Orphanages go to schools run by the organizations, so we offer you the chance to combine teaching at schools and working in the Orphange in the afternoons. This combination allows you to get the best experiences.

Orientation

On you arrival at your volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During this session you’ll be told what to expect the following day as well as the departure and pick up times.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project we will provide transportation. You may be transported alone or with a group depending on your project location.

What to expect on the first day of your project

We promised that you’ll always have our team working with you, so as a part of your in-country support we provide one of our Program Advisors to accompany you to your project on your first day. You’ll be introduced to the local staff who will help you settle in. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Free Times in the afternoons:

Most evenings you’ll go back to your volunteer home to hang out and plan for the next day, but we continually look for eye-opening cultural activities for you to do in your free time. Because of this, we sometimes offer you opportunities to attend local events in the afternoons.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our orphanage volunteer projects are available all year- round allowing you to take part when you can, so on your application, you’ll indicate your start and end dates. Although we are flexible there are times during the year when Jamaica has major holidays and celebration, so it is advisable to plan your trip that your dates do not coincide with these major events.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?

It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome.

Pre- set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid–week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
