With the Jamaican public mental health system overburdened and patient load at an all-time high, help is desperately needed for families and teens in the area of psychology and adolescent counselling.

Many private clinics and programs funded by international donors have helped to ease the pressure on the poor and those from marginalized communities. You will be placed at a community clinic that offers several treatment options for person suffering from various mental disorders.

Pre-medical students and doctors in training specializing in psychology can work at this facility and depending on your level of experience and skills you may be asked to participate in any of the following activities or observe and shadow the other healthcare practitioners.

  • Group games
  • Field trips
  • Movie days and trips to the nearby park
  • And much more

There will be many opportunities to build your skills and get experience. You’ll get the opportunity to do field study, research and collaboration with our community partners. If you are not comfortable with any of the tasks given, our model combines community-driven work where you can identify a need and focus on special awareness information programs.

This placement is suitable for pre–med students, and doctors in training. If you are a trained doctor we welcome your services. Depending on your qualifications and training you would be placed in hospitals, clinics or participate in our community health fairs.

Our psychology internships for college students are tailored to each person’s specific needs. We treat each intern’s placement individually and try to work with your request.

The relationships that we have developed with our partners allow interns to get a high-caliber clinical experience and hands on work. The medical staff at all the facilities we use welcome interns and see them as a vital part of how they offer their services. Because of this, they are happy to offer supervision and the best possible help.

To get the best out of an internship, interns are allowed to work with most of the services offered. These include wellness clinics, family planning, sexually transmitted clinics, maternity, pediatrics and primary and secondary health care.

We work with interns on an individual basis and try to place each person based on the requested position. Sometimes this is not always possible but we try very hard. If you have a special request for placement we will be happy to discuss this.

Through participating in health fairs, visiting different clinics and meeting patients we have gained practical skills and learned about the challenges that Jamaica is facing. We are happy about our placement.

I Cannot Imagine A Better Way To Have Spent This Past Month Of My Life

The experience I had at Jamaica Volunteer Program was both life giving and adventurous. On the weekdays I was able to enjoy growing in my understanding of mental health while on the weekend explore the beauty Jamaica has to offer.

I cannot imagine a better way to have spent this past month of my life and anticipate to do it all over again in the near future. Grateful to have met the wonderful people of this country and hope I gave even half of the inspiration and love as they gave me.

My psychology internship allowed me to gain working experience

I was doing psychology internship. I am a third year psychology student and this project allowed me to gain some working experience. I really enjoyed that.
The most memorable part of my experience was the conversations with the patients. This patient did not talk to anyone else before about her problems, so it was a very important event for both of us.
The accommodation was good and the housekeeper was excellent. My room was cleaned everyday and the food was really nice.
I went to the beach twice, Glistening Waters and Montego Bay, Bob Marley’s Museum and Also the Dunn’s River Falls. I enjoyed Glistening Waters the most.
The staff was very supportive. They picked us up on time from our project and ensured that we were kept safe at all times. I felt very safe.
I think I was able to help a lot of the clients, as they really needed attention and someone one to spend time with.
I would recommend this project because it was a nice experience for me. I enjoyed helping the clients and getting to know them. I am happy that I could explore a new cuture.

I would be interested in a psychology internship through Jamaica volunteer programs, but I’m curious to know whether you have any part-time opportunities within the program. I would also like to know a little bit more information about the psychology program. Thanks.
