Volunteer Abroad Human Rights Projects - Is This For You?

Overview

Volunteer Abroad Human Rights Projects: Is this for you?

If you’ve got your heart set on a volunteer experience of lifetime, why not come to Jamaica for volunteer human rights projects, and learn about social issues by working alongside those directly affected. Go where few, if any people you know have gone and immerse in a new culture while boosting your CV.

Do this all by helping to raise awareness of human rights, help people who are suffering from issues with domestic violence, housing disputes, children’s shelters, at risk youths and disadvantaged communities.

Jamaica has many volatile communities where juveniles and the unemployed live. With no work or educational opportunities they become breeding grounds for crime, disputes and violence. Empowering these marginalized communities and at risk groups with information and education is the foundation of the universal human rights principles. Human rights law volunteers abroad, human rights students, interns and professionals are needed. When you volunteer in Jamaica, your skills, interest and abilities will be accessed and you’ll be given work that’s best suited for you.

Jamaica Volunteer Programs partners with a number of non- government organizations to provide opportunities for all with a general interest in human rights and who seek practical international experience.

There are three main areas in which you can contribute to human rights projects in Jamaica

You can select any of the following areas best suited to your abilities:

Administration: Support in-house lawyers and advocates of human rights. If you are looking to build your knowledge of basic human rights principles, and help develop educational materials for empowerment this might be the area for you. Some popular tasks you’ll be working on are researching and compiling data in a database, write reports, filing documents, undertaking legal research and general administrative support.

Communication and outreach: Human rights projects are available for people who have been abused and are not aware of their fundamental rights. Helping to raise awareness by visiting marginalized communities, especially with at risk groups is a major part of the work in communication and outreach. Trained lawyers and legal experts are welcome to volunteers in these areas. Examples of what you’ll do there are; communicating your understanding and knowledge of the universal human rights principles, making presentations, hosting workshops and more.

Be a part of the Legal/Response Team: When people are armed with information about their rights they become empowered and then seek legal assistance. Your help and assistance will be needed to support the legal response team.

As part of this volunteer abroad law and human rights team, you’ll assist in the monitoring of communities to identify individuals and groups who need assistance. When you have accessed their needs, you’ll design strategies to resolve their issues.

Here are some areas of need for human rights projects in Jamaica:

  • Providing legal counsel to victims of abuse who come to the human rights offices
  • Do legal research
  • Work on projects such as documentaries
  • Visit marginalized communities and make presentations to organizations and schools to bring awareness of issue and their rights
  • Conduct out-of-office fieldwork, including outreach projects with abused women and children’s shelters

Whether you are a human rights advocate, law student, intern or trained professional, we welcome you to serve and educate our people in marginalized communities. Build your skills and boost your resume while participating in worthwhile campaigns to advance change.

To work on this project no prior experience is required but you must have a love and interest for human rights or society and justice. Law students, interns or trained professionals seeking international experience are welcomed.

To get started, apply online by completing our application form and attach your CV with a cover letter. Don’t forget to indicate your area of interest or skills. Our program advisors will review your documents and find a match that’s best suited to your abilities.

Project days & times:

Your human rights projects will be available Monday – Friday from 9:00am to approximately 4:30pm. If you would like a shorter day we can organize this.

We want you to be totally immersed in the Jamaican culture so on weekends our organization offers day excursions and cultural immersion experiences. We continually look for eye-opening cultural activities for you to do in your free time.

Duration of this project

We strive to be flexible so we offer projects for a minimum of one week or for as long as three months.

Do More than One Project

Human Rights volunteers often combine placements with work in Orphanages. If you are interested in working with children in Orphanages or childcare facilities you can make this request.

How this program works?

On you arrival at your volunteer home you will be given an orientation. During the orientation you’ll be told what to expect the following day and the time of departure.

Transportation:

On your first day and every day of your project we will provide transportation. Depending on your project location, you may travel alone or with other volunteers.

What to expect on the first day of your project

We promise you support every step of the way, so we’ll have one of our Program Advisors accompany you to your project the first day. We’ll introduce you to the local staff and go over all the details to make sure that you feel confident.

Before our departure, we will help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we will show you how to find the closest food store. At end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Free Time in the afternoons:

When you volunteer with Jamaica Volunteer Programs you get the full experience. In the afternoons we offer opportunities to learn about the Jamaica culture and if possible you can attend eye-opening cultural events.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our human rights projects are available all year-round allowing you to take part when you can, so on your application, you’ll indicate your start and end dates. Although we are flexible there are times during the year when Jamaica has major holidays and celebrations, so it is advisable to plan your trip that your dates do not coincide with these major events.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?
It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome.

Pre- set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a Monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid–week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
