This is a time in your life when you can seek to reconnect with your passions and recharge your mind from studying those long hours. This trip combines the best that Jamaica has to offer, meaningful work and a deep cultural immersion.

Meaningful work

During your Winter Break trip you will have the option to work on any of our volunteer projects, however the most popular options are teaching, working at an orphange or participating in a building and construction project. Volunteering in Jamaica will give you the opportunity to meet people and make a lasting contribution to the communities where you are working.

Immerse yourself in a new culture

In Jamaica there is no snow during winter and one of the first things you’ll notice is the humidity that hits you as you disembark from the aircraft. Forget about winter coats, and everything you have always imagined Christmas would be like. You are about to have a new experience.

Learn to speak Jamaican

You’ll need to learn how to speak Jamaican fast. Although English is the official language of Jamaica, our local dialect is widely spoken. This is a blend of african words with the slave master’s english. It is a fun and colourful language. Have fun as you learn new words.

Music is the Heartbeat of Jamaica

Don’t forget the music or Jamaicans will never forgive you! Everywhere you go around the island you’ll hear music. They will be played to the beat of Reggae Music. Go ahead and learn the latest dance moves.

This winter make your dream of volunteering abroad a reality and discover the wonders in yourself. To begin planning your volunteer abroad trip, contact one of our expert program advisors today!

Project Info

Project Info

Winter Break Volunteer Abroad Programs are open to all, whether you volunteer during Christmas or the peak season during January. Previous work experience is not a necessity but will always give you an edge.

Here’s how we will work together:

Step 1

As soon as your application is approved, we’ll work with you to find a project that is suitable for your skills and experience.

Step 2

Our program advisor will then contact you to discuss the activities you want in your itinerary. We’ll share ideas with you that have been successful with volunteers in the past.

Step 3

Pre-planning is a crucial part of the process in ensuring that your volunteer work will be impactful. We advise you to start collecting or purchasing resources you want to share with the children as soon as possible. Some of these could be play dough, arts & craft or entertainment equipment.

Project days & times:

We want you to experience living like a local, so sometimes we provide opportunities for you to attend cultural immersion activities in your free time.

Duration of this project

Our Winter Break Volunteer Abroad Programs allows you to volunteer for no less than a week and no more than three months.

Project Combination

Combining teaching and orphanage volunteering is a popular option. We offer you the chance to teach in the mornings and work at the orphanage in the afternoons.

How Winter Break Volunteer Abroad Programs works?

After arriving at the volunteer accommodation, you’ll participate in an orientation session to know what to expect during your stay.

Transportation:

We provide daily transportation to and from your project.

What to expect on the first day of your project

  1. Our staff will help you settle in and learn about your home away from home.
  2. A program advisor will accompany you to your project
  3. We will not leave you until we are sure that you are comfortable and have clear instructions on what to do.

Before our departure, we’ll help you make arrangements for an affordable lunch or we’ll show you how to find the closest food store. At the end of the day, we’ll pick you up at the agreed time. On your way home, we can go the extra mile to allow you to purchase supplies or get money changed to our local currency.

Activities during your Free Time:

We try to make your experience better by providing eye-opening cultural activities in the afternoons. We look for opportunities for you to attend local events or for you to participate in sporting activities.

Start Dates

Start Dates

Our winter volunteering projects are available from December to January allowing you to take part when you can, so on your application you’ll indicate your start and end dates. Although we are flexible there are times during the year when Jamaica has major holidays and celebrations, so it is advisable to plan your trip that your dates do not coincide with these major events.

Looking to plan your arrival during major events or celebrations?

It is possible to start your project on a major holiday or during the celebration of an event. This needs pre-planning so that you become part of the event or activities. During major holidays and events your help is especially welcome.

Pre-set arrival dates

If you are travelling as a group or with family members, we’ll work with you to set the dates of your arrival. We ask that you book your flight to arrive on the weekend so that you can start on a monday. If your arrival date cannot be on a weekend, you need to make special arrangements for a mid–week start date.

Last minute booking

We encourage you to always plan your volunteering trips early as pre-planning allows you to get more out of your trip. If you decide at the last minute to volunteer in Jamaica, it might be possible to make it happen but it will depend on the project. Complete the application form and contact us to find out if we can make the project of your choice happen.
